I was 4th or 5th on the totem pole of who to call.

My old friend Herb called me yesterday. He lives in my building and needed help picking up his wife's nitroglycerin. He told me she calls it "dynamite." She had a heart attack last week and apparently, all of his usual helpers were either sick or busy. It took him a while to get around to asking me and I was glad he did. Many people think that I will be put out or it will upset my schedule. It seems she had gotten down to her 2 last pills and he was also due for a pick up of one of his meds. We met him down in the parking garage. He got off of his scooter and headed towards me and my nurse. The man is 90 years old and can hardly see, so considering that, he was moving pretty well. UNTIL, he tried to climb into the back of my mini van. He had trouble getting in and when he did, had to lay on the floor with his head resting on the seat. Thank goodness I am only 4 minutes from Target. Once we got home and parked the same thing happened. He had a difficult time getting out of the van as well. It was hard to see this and my mind went into how else can I help this old friend! I decided to trust him when he was telling me more about his extended family and how they still take him shopping and to Doctors etc., and how he has a fridge full of food. God Bless them. Between the two of them, they have so many health problems and it's another case where this Air Force Veteran deserves to have someone take care of him for a change! It seems he has pretty decent benefits, but the County and State have determined that he makes "too much" to even get a meals on wheels lunch for himself. (his wife gets one though) Or a housekeeper service. It just goes on and on. I wish this time in their lives wan't so stressful, but thank God they do have a caring family! I'll take being on the bottom of the list anytime Herb.
