Yesterday my son took me to our foodshelf. The cupboards had been dwindling down, so I decided to go take advantage of their help. The support from my ex has been quite unstable this winter. Not sure why, but when I asked him about late payments in a phone conversation I was given an abrupt, "it's slow right now, you should know that!" Ah yes, brought back memories of how when I was married, I was supposed to always be a mind reader.
Anyways, we pulled into the parking lot and there was a man there in his car and then another woman pulled up next to us and she got out, then the man got out and I noticed them talking and being very animated in their hand gestures and body movement. To me, it looked like they were doing the friendly Minnesotan chat. Why would I think otherwise? Just assumed they were being friendly. I was getting out of my van and realized that they were not having a lighthearted conversation. They were actually fighting in public. Fighting about who was to be 1st in line, and really getting into each others' faces. I rode up to them and said, "you're not fighting over who is to be 1st in line are you?" To which the woman replied, "well you all didn't jump out of your car as soon as you saw me!" They started yelling at each other again and realizing that these two were not mentally stable, I backed way off and me and my son just kept a safe distance.
I tried not to judge them because I think desperation does something to you. It sounded like they both had kids to provide for and even thought there's plenty for everyone who needs it, they both had a blank stare and you could see the desperation in their eyes. It was an experience that I'm sure we will never forget.
