Are You Watching The Olympics?
I've been watching the Olympics my entire life! I can remember my entire family huddled around our main TV set and oohing and aahing at the downhill racers and the pristine figure skaters. Especially Dorothy Hamill! I even go as far back as Peggy Flemming! I really enjoy the back stories of the athletes. Where they come from, how they got interested in their sport. How many grueling days and hours they have put into practicing. How they live and breath for the shot at earning GOLD. What they and their families have had to sacrifice and had to "give up" for the chance to be participating in the historic Olympic competition. I like to talk about the emerging young athletic stars. With each nurse that comes in, I will usually not generate too much conversation, but the other day, one of my newer nurses came in. I was enjoying the couple's figure skating so much that I had to ask, "do you watch the Olympics?" She answered that "No, I am staging my own little protest of the Olympics." Of course, she then went on to say that there were allegedly many foreign workers who were hired to help get the city ready for the events and then they were deported. Talk about buzz kill! So now, each time I watch a competition, this is in the back of my head. I guess I have some researching to do. Is this common knowledge? Did I miss out on a huge controversy? Oh well, I'll still be watching.
