What are some of your earliest memories of Dr. King? I have to say that since we didn't have MLK day when I was young, I didn't really understand fully the impact he made on our world. I do remember 1st learning of slavery and Black culture when I was waaaay back in the fourth grade. I can honestly remember that it was so hard for me to understand this concept of human beings being slaves for other human beings. It was a very harsh part of our history for me to take in. It was about this time in my life, when I had my 1st black friends. They were a pair of fraternal twin sisters who moved in just 2 doors down from me. It seems that upon our 1st meeting, we were to become good friends and neighbors. They were bubbly and vivacious. They had a newness and a happening style. Their names were even extraordianry for me. Daphne and Donnazell. Their family gave our whole neighborhood a real boost. I'm so glad to have had them for my friends. They lived with their grandparents and they too became good friends of my parents. So humorous were they all together.
The twins had pierced earrings and it was a big deal back then to have them as a young girl. I didn't know anyone else who had them. I will never forget how special it was for me to get mine pierced in the 4 th grade. It was one of my 1st stepping stones into young womanhood. I may sound dramatic, but it was special for me.
I'm just so glad that in my life I have had many friends of all shapes, size, nationalities,,,I guess that's all I have to say about that!
